| Indicative mood | Used for ordinary objective statements; verb forms are inflected. | The performance starts in 10 minutes. |
| Imperative mood | Used in commands; second person present is the only form. | Start the performance. |
| Subjunctive mood | Used for subjective, doubtful, hypothetical statements without inflection. | The doctor suggested that Mr. Ramirez start a diet. |

The subjunctive mood is used in noun clauses after verbs like recommend, suggest, order, urge, require, demand, etc. The subjunctive mood implies that the action or state expressed by the verb is subjective, or only speculative. Actual realization of a subjunctive verb is uncertain, doubtful, or hypothetical. Since there is no certitude that the action of the verb will be realized, it remains in the realm of speculation. Therefore, a subjunctive verb is never inflected to show time or agreement. Only the base form is used. Select a verb from the table below to complete the sentences. | Two verbs above can be followed by an infinitive. The subject of the subjunctive verb in the noun clause becomes the subject (actor) of the infinitive. Note these sentences: • The doctor strongly urged Mr. Chen to quit smoking. • The teacher urges parents of unruly children to meet with her to resolve their discipline problems. • The curriculum requires students in certain classes to enroll in a lab course. • NCAA rules require sports fans to avoid racial slurs and hate language during games. |
